Car Windshield Care

Windshield Care

Maintaining your windshield is one of the main priorities of your car.  It makes the car look good and it helps you drive safer.  In a collision, the windshield is what prevents the roof from caving in.  Here are some important tips to contemplate when it comes to taking care of your windshield.

If you have a crack or chip in your glass get it fixed right away.  Sometimes when you are driving, debris such as pebbles, sand, or trash can cause dings in the glass.  Over time the dings will turn into bigger cracks.

Don’t slam your car doors.  Slamming the doors cause strong vibrations to the windshield.  The vibrations can cause the dings to spread.

Don’t leave your vehicle in direct sunlight.  Extended exposure to sunlight can shorten the life of your windshield.  If there is a great temperature different on either side of the windshield, the dings could get worse.

Clean the windshield with vinegar or alcohol.  Use cotton or microfiber towels.  Don’t use ammonia based glass cleaners.  They could destroy the tint.

Use a rag to clean the wipers.  Dirt and sand can get on the wipers and scratch the windshield.  Rub the rag on the blades to remove the dirt, dust and sand.

Gerber Collision and Glass want you to keep your windshield in good condition.  If you have any questions or concerns don’t hesitate to call us at 1-877-7gerber. Don’t forget your windshield tips.

Windshield Wiper Motor

Windshield Wiper Motor

An electric motor is what makes the wiper blades move back and forth.  This happens as soon as you turn on your windshield wipers.  The majority of cars have a single wiper motor that controls the wipers on the front of your car.  When a car has a back window wiper, it will have a separate motor.

The front windshield wiper motor is generally located under the outside vent at the bottom of your windshield. It is what moves the linkage back and forth to the wiper transmissions.  This causes the wiper arms to move.

The motors could fail and need to be replaced.  Gerber Collision and Glass encourage you to replace the motor to get your wipers back up and running for the rainy season.

Hurricane Irene and Car Damage

Hurricane Irene – What should you know about damage to your car after the storm passes.

Hurricane Irene continues up the east coast as a destructive Category 1 hurricane, whose maximum sustained winds reached about 90 miles an hour, with occasional stronger gusts.   It’s unlikely for motorists to see damage to their vehicle from the wind itself.  However, the wind causes flying objects, such as falling trees or hail which could damage your vehicle’s windshield. Having your auto glass repaired or replaced after a Hurricane shouldn’t cause you stress.   Even a small crack or chip in your windshield from Hurricane Irene is a significant safety problem and all our repairs are covered by our lifetime guarantee.

With an overwhelming number of motorist needing to get back on the road after the storm passes, Gerber Collision and Glass wants to remind you that we can take care of your auto needs.   We offer convenient auto glass repair and replacement service, both in our shops and via free mobile service.  We have several locations along the east coast to better server you.

What to do if your car is hit by a tree – How to repair your windsheild

Biff – “Make like a tree, and get outta here…!!!”…. Future Old Biff – “it’s make like and tree and leave!” Get it? Leave?… trees have leaves… okay well, it’s a famous and funny line from the Back To The Future movies. Gotta love those movies, and gotta love trees! Trees are soo important because they bring us food, shelter, lumber, tools, oxygen, and sooo much more! Trees are homes for animal life and great for the environment. They even provide a sound barrier for noise from roadways, construction and other activities.

But, (there is always a but), trees can sometimes NOT be the best of friends to our pals, the cars! Now, we are not talking about some kind of mysterious force causing a tree to fall on a car…. We are talking about the drivers that lose control of their vehicles and wrap them around a tree on the side of the road, or are texting while driving (a big no-no), or driving under the influence (an even bigger no-no). These accidents are dangerous! Gerber Collision and Glass is always here to see to it that your automobile is repaired right! We offer full service auto body repairs and auto glass services to get you up and running. Please be careful folks and watch out for them trees!!!

Car Safety During a Hurricane – What to do while driving in a storm

The Hurricane… Now I’m not referring to the boxing movie starring Denzel Washington playing Rubin “Hurricane” Carter who was imprisoned for murder but was innocence. While that was a great movie, I’m referring to a hurricane storm! A storm that consists of violent winds, rains, hail, thunder, and lighting. These storms are extremely dangerous and everyone needs to prepare for such storms.

We need to get ready for the storm coming”. That is what most say when a hurricane is coming, and Floridians know all too well what a hurricane can do. Not only can the damaging winds do harm to yourself and your homes, but also to your cars!

With the threatening of the upcoming storm, named Emily, which is now downgraded to a tropical wave (thankfully), I am reminded of what damage can be done to your cars. The violent winds, flooding, falling trees and much more can do serious damage to your cars.  Gerber Collision and Glass can assist in these times, and help you get what you need done to your cars and get your back on the road! Please see us as we will provide any assistance necessary to you or your loved ones. And please be safe!
